Walkerton rolls over Mitchell, 4-1

The Walkerton Hawks had a two-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 4-1 win over the Mitchell Hawks.

Mitchell was stymied by Walkerton netminder Trevor Fleming, who stopped 31 shots during the victory. Fleming certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.99 entering the contest.

The Hawks pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 27 penalty minutes.

Walkerton's offense rang up 43 shots on the Hawks' net.

The Hawks were led by Josh Deyel (AP), who had one goal and one assist. Deyel (AP) scored 18:09 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Walkerton. Josh Perdue provided the assist. Others who scored for Walkerton included Joel Bowman, Drew Davidson, and Jay Thomson, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Walkerton were Brandon Lamothe, who had two and Chris Gillman, Lauchlin Elder, and Brennon Pearce, who contributed one a piece.

Mitchell forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and one major for 41 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 26.0 minutes per game the Hawks had been spending in the box. Mitchell's offense operated below it season average. The Hawks average 3.7 goals per game. Walkerton was unable to stop Mitchell from sending pucks towards the net, and the Hawks eventually piled up 32 shots on goal.

Mitchell was led by Jerry Ennet, who scored the team's only goal. Ennet scored on the power play 16:33 into the third period to make the score 3-1 Walkerton. The Hawks had taken the advantage when the Hawks' Brendan Welsh(AP) got sent off for roughing. Tyler Tolton picked up the assist.

Walkerton registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. For the Hawks, Calvin Penney was ejected from the game. Ben Nelson made 39 saves for Mitchell on 43 shots. The Hawks registered one goal on six power play opportunities. Mitchell ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Adam Zehr was ejected from the game.
