Walkerton falls to Mount Forest in overtime, 5-4 (OT)Walkerton Community Centre Fri, Nov 29, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The Mount Forest Patriots' Trevor Hughson scored 48 seconds into overtime to beat the Walkerton Hawks, 5-4 (OT). Mount Forest came back from a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Patriots fell behind 3-1 after a goal by Walkerton's Drew Davidson at 19:35 in the second period. Mount Forest knotted things up at 4-4 on a goal by Luke Richardson at 19:28 in the third period. Hughson had a great game for the Patriots, netting two goals. Mount Forest kept the Hawks' goalie busy throughout the game, and Adam Kalbfleisch made 31 saves on 36 shots. The Patriots could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 34 minutes in penalties during the game. Mount Forest additionally got points from Richardson, who also registered two goals and one assist to lead the team in points. Doug Ardis also scored for Mount Forest. Other players who recorded assists for Mount Forest were Mitch Betts, who had two and Justin Graham, Matt Marshall, and Ben Davis, who each chipped in one. Mount Forest was unable to stop Walkerton from sending pucks towards the net, and the Hawks eventually piled up 35 shots on goal. Walkerton was led by Calvin Penney, who tallied two goals. Penney scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 15:54 into the first period to make the score 1-1. The Hawks earned a power play opportunity when Marshall was put in the box for holding. Lauchlin Elder picked up the assist. Penney's next tally on the power play made the score 4-3 Walkerton with 1:21 left in the third period. A checking from behind penalty on Eric Maecker had put Walkerton on the power play. Joel Bowman provided the assist. Walkerton also got a goal from Brett Coulson as well. More assists for Walkerton came via Nathan Kramer, David Gallo, Brandon Lamothe, and Brennon Pearce, who contributed one a piece. The Patriots' John Nixon stopped 31 shots out of the 35 that he faced. Mount Forest registered three goals on six power play opportunities. The Patriots ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Maecker was ejected from the game. The Hawks incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. For Walkerton, Jay Thomson was ejected from the game.
