Mount Forest penalty kill dominates in 7-3 defeat of WalkertonMount Forest Wed, Jan 08, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
Despite having to fight off several power plays, the Mount Forest Patriots were able to defeat the Walkerton Hawks, 7-3. Mount Forest's penalty kill managed to stymie Walkerton's power play, giving up only one goal while playing with a man down. The Patriots outdid their season average for goals scored. This season, Mount Forest averages 4.3 goals per contest. The Patriots could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 34 minutes in penalties during the game. Mount Forest was helped by Trevor Hughson, who tallied two goals. Hughson scored the first of his two goals short handed at 16:29 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Mount Forest. A goalie interference call on Matt Marshall put the Patriots on the penalty kill. Hughson's next tally short handed made the score 7-3 Mount Forest with 25 seconds left in the third period. Mount Forest found itself down a man on Cody Wright's roughing after whistle. Ben Davis picked up the assist. Mount Forest additionally got points from Davis, who also registered one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Mount Forest included Justin Graham, who had two and Devin Williams and Kyle Hunter, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Mount Forest were Luke Richardson, who had three. The Hawks were held below their usual level of production. Walkerton puts an average of 5.2 pucks into the net per game. The Patriots were unable to stop the Hawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Walkerton eventually piled up 31 shots on goal. The Hawks were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 40 penalty minutes. Walkerton was helped by Brandon Lamothe, who racked up one goal. Lamothe scored on the power play 8:20 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Mount Forest. A cross checking penalty on Williams had put the Hawks on the power play. Tyler Snyder assisted on the tally. Walkerton also got points from Brett Coulson, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Walkerton also got a goal from Lauchlin Elder as well. More assists for Walkerton came via Brendan Welsh(AP), Josh Deyel (AP), and Ryan Hamelin, who contributed one a piece. John Nixon made 28 saves for Mount Forest on 31 shots. The Patriots registered two goals on 11 power play opportunities. For Mount Forest, Marshall was ejected from the game. Walkerton's starting goalie, Trevor Fleming, made 14 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Adam Kalbfleisch, who stopped nine shots. Team's Drew Davidson and Lamothe were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
