Chippawa survives Hagersville comeback, wins 6-5

The Hagersville Hawks tried to dig themselves out of a four-goal hole, but the Chippawa Riverhawks held on for a 6-5 victory.

Chippawa made the score 4-0 on a goal by Dylan Lazarus at 2:02 in the second period, and Hagersville got as close as 5-4 when Jacob Brown scored 10:38 into the third period.

Michael Rogers was all over the ice for the Riverhawks, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Rogers scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 15:49 into the second period to make the score 5-2 Chippawa. Chippawa had gotten the advantage when the Hawks' Austin Dezeeuw was sent off for cross checking. Curtis Sauve assisted on the tally. Rogers' next tally on the power play made the score 6-5 Chippawa with 1:59 left in the third period. Sauve picked up the assist.

Hagersville was unable to stop the Riverhawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Chippawa eventually piled up 31 shots on goal. The Riverhawks' goal total was higher than their season average. This season, Chippawa averages 3.7 goals per contest. The Riverhawks were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 28 penalty minutes.

Chippawa also got points from Kyle Robertson, who also registered one goal and one assist and Sauve, who also finished with one goal and two assists. AP Mathew Thorpe also scored for Chippawa. In addition, Chippawa received assists from Luke Brackett, who had two, Jonathan England, who had three, and Joseph Costello and Adam Quait, who contributed one a piece.

The Hawks kept Chippawa's goalie busy throughout the game, and Colin Dunne made 29 saves on 34 shots. Hagersville got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed three goals during the game. The Hawks could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 34 minutes in penalties during the game.

Hagersville was led by Derek Medeiros, who tallied one goal and one assist. Medeiros scored on the power play 13:42 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Chippawa. The Hawks had taken the advantage when the Riverhawks' Quait got sent off for tripping. Aleck Boyd provided the assist. Hagersville additionally got points from Brad Hornby, who also had one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Hagersville included Hayden Baird and Derek Low, who each put in one. More assists for Hagersville came via Mitch Green, who had two and Nick Sherwood, Travis Bell, Kyle Phibbs, and Clayton Millard, who each chipped in one.

Chippawa registered three goals on nine power play opportunities. Hagersville's Matt Murphy stopped 25 shots out of the 31 that he faced. The Hawks registered four goals on eight power play opportunities.
