Dykstra, Austin (FAPM) dominate Mt.Brydges, lead Exeter to 6-3 win

Behind one goal from Joe Dykstra and two goals Carter Austin (FAPM), the Exeter Hawks downed the Mt.Brydges Bulldogs 6-3.

Dykstra scored on the power play 6:47 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Exeter. Exeter had gained a power play chance when Robert McTaggart was whistled for holding. Trevor Thornton picked up the assist. Austin (FAPM) scored the first of his two goals at 39 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Exeter. Thornton provided the assist. Austin (FAPM)'s next tally made the score 2-1 Exeter with 13:27 left in the first period. Dykstra assisted on the tally.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 8:34 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Hawks were often in penalty trouble, totaling nine minors and one major for 43 minutes in penalty time. Exeter had been averaging 30.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Hawks forced Mt.Brydges' goalies to work in net, totaling 34 shots and forcing 28 saves. Andrew Harrimand-Duke made 21 stops and Patrick Maziarz made seven. Exeter put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Bulldogs to score on any of their five power plays. The Hawks bested their season scoring average. Exeter has scored at the pace of 2.7 goals per game during the current campaign.

Exeter also got points from Thornton, who also registered one goal and three assists. Brodie Balcom also scored for Exeter. In addition, Exeter received assists from Kalvin Thornton, who had two and Braedon Van Hooydoak, Jacob MacDougall, and Jesse McIntyre, who each chipped in one.

The Mt.Brydges penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 10 minors and one major for 35 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 26.0 minutes per game the Bulldogs had been spending in the box. Mt.Brydges forced the Hawks goalie Dylan Hoover to work between the pipes, taking 43 shots.

The Bulldogs were led by Grant Johns, who racked up two goals and one assist. Johns scored the first of his two goals at 2:18 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Curtis Taylor picked up the assist. Johns' next tally made the score 2-2 with 34 seconds left in the first period. Other players who recorded assists for Mt.Brydges were Tony Lindner and Grant Duffield, who contributed one a piece.

Hoover rejected 40 shots on goal for Exeter. The Hawks registered one goal on six power play opportunities. For Exeter, Van Hooydoak was ejected from the game. Mt.Brydges ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Connor Knapman was ejected from the game.
