Wellesley beats Burford 11-5 as Stoody gets hat trick

Alex Stoody lifted the Wellesley Applejacks to an 11-5 victory with a hat trick against the Burford Bulldogs.

Stoody got on the scoresheet 4:25 into the first period. He then added goals at 17:01 into the second and at 17:15 into the second.

Wellesley made Bulldogs' goalies to work between the pipes, ripping 40 shots and forcing 29 saves. Nick Trask made 12 stops and Riley Edwards made 17. The Applejacks surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Wellesley averages 5.1 goals per game. The Applejacks' penalty kill was ineffective, and let in two goals to Burford's power play unit.

Wellesley additionally got points from Cal Jefferies, who also finished with one goal and one assist, Mackenzie Shantz, who also registered one goal and one assist, Cody Tapsell, who also tallied one goal and two assists, Devon Wagner, who also had one goal and one assist, and Brett MacDonald, who also racked up two goals and one assist. Reid Denstedt also scored for Wellesley. More assists for Wellesley came via Eric Heffennan, who had three, Blake Hetherington and Mckenzie Carter, who each chipped in one, and Luke Rose and Sean McEwan, who contributed two a piece.

The Bulldogs forced Wellesley's goaltenders to work all game long, totaling 39 shots and forcing 34 saves. Josh Heer made 23 stops and Brayden Bruce made 11.

Burford was helped by J.J. Harland, who grabbed two goals and three assists. Harland scored the first of his two goals at 6:51 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Kyle Chaney picked up the assist. Harland's next tally made the score 9-4 Wellesley with 17:19 left in the third period. The Bulldogs had gained a power play chance when Wagner was whistled for checking from behind. Chaney assisted on the tally. Burford also got points from Chaney, who also finished with one goal and four assists and Adam Harris, who also registered one goal and one assist. Burford also got a goal from Pat Bates as well.

The Applejacks incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. For Wellesley, Wagner was ejected from the game. Burford incurred 32 minutes in penalty time with six minors. The Bulldogs ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Blaise Burtnick was ejected from the game.
