Norwich survives penalties, beats Woodstock, 5-2Norwich Community Center Fri, Jan 17, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
The Woodstock Navy Vets failed to take advantage of their power play opportunities and the Norwich Merchants shook off a number of penalties to win, 5-2. Norwich put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Woodstock to score on any of its six power plays. The defensemen of the Merchants were also effective in the Navy Vets' zone, and came away with two goals. Norwich was helped by Drake Morrell, who registered one goal. Morrell scored 10:31 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Norwich. Brandon Zimmermann provided the assist. Norwich additionally got points from Zach Couwenberg, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Ryan Stephenson, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Norwich also had goals scored by Nick Burdett and Trevor Richardson, who each put in one. In addition, Norwich received assists from Todd Kemp, Mitchell Berzins, Zack Morrison, and Taylor Gosset, who contributed one a piece. Woodstock was helped by Michael Nutt, who had one goal. Nutt scored 21 seconds into the third period to make the score 3-1 Norwich. Zackary Housworth (AP) also scored for Woodstock. More assists for Woodstock came via Derrick Fried, who had one. The Merchants' Zac Easveld stopped 16 shots out of the 18 that he faced. Norwich incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Patrick Tanner took the loss and made eight saves before being replaced by Michael Roefs who made 14 saves. The Navy Vets ended with 21 minutes in penalty time with eight minors and one major. Team's Tyler Brown and Chris Nauts (AP) were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
