Ayr holds on for 5-4 win against WellesleyNorth Dumfries Sun, Jan 12, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
The Ayr Centennials survived a determined comeback attempt by the Wellesley Applejacks on the way to a 5-4 win. A goal by Eric Hackborn put Ayr up 5-3 in the third period, but Wellesley pulled to within one on Luke Rose's tally 15:03 into the third period. The Centennials were led by Hackborn, who racked up one goal. Hackborn scored 11:06 into the third period to make the score Ayr. Jeff Howlett assisted on the tally. Ayr kept the Applejacks' goalie busy throughout the game, and Josh Heer made 35 saves on 40 shots. The Centennials got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game. Ayr also got points from Anthony Pullia, who also registered one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Ayr included Adam Fisher, Mac Kemp, and Andrew Richard, who scored one goal each. More assists for Ayr came via Riley Clipper, who had two and Jake Whibbs, Connor Voigt, and Mike McKnight, who each chipped in one. Wellesley was held back by its power play unit, which tallied two goals on nine chances. The Applejacks were helped by Cody Tapsell, who finished with two goals. Tapsell scored the first of his two goals at 10:55 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Ayr. Devon Wagner picked up the assist. Tapsell's next tally made the score 4-3 Ayr with 10:25 left in the third period. A roughing penalty on Howlett had put Wellesley on the power play. Cal Jefferies assisted on the tally. Wellesley additionally got points from Jefferies, who also grabbed one goal and one assist and Rose, who also had one goal and two assists. Ayr's Lee Doherty stopped 18 shots out of the 22 that he faced. The Centennials incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. The Applejacks incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Wellesley ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Troy Williams was ejected from the game.
