Wellesley uses shootout to best Ayr, 6-5 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Wellesley Applejacks defeated the Ayr Centennials in a shootout 6-5 (1-0 SO).

The shootout lasted for five attempts between the teams.

Wellesley came back from a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Applejacks was down 4-2 after a power play goal by Ayr's Andrew Richard at 9:27 in the third period. Wellesley knotted things up at 5-5 on a power play goal by Taylor Doering at 18:32 in the third period.

The Applejacks kept the Centennials' goalie busy throughout the game, and Mitch Figueirdo made 37 saves on 43 shots. Wellesley could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 46 minutes in penalties during the game.

Wellesley also got points from Felix Lantaigne, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Wellesley also had goals scored by Luke Rose and Sean McEwan, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Wellesley were Troy Williams, who had one and Reid Denstedt, Brett MacDonald, and Parker Wood, who contributed two a piece.

Ayr's offense rang up 51 shots on the Applejacks' net. The Centennials' defense was uncharacteristically lax during the game. Ayr averages 2.5 goals allowed per game.

The Centennials were helped by Anthony Pullia, who registered two goals. Pullia scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 11:34 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Ayr. A hooking penalty on Rose had put Ayr on the power play. Eric Hackborn picked up the assist. Pullia's next tally on the power play made the score 3-2 Ayr with 11:18 left in the third period. The Centennials earned a power play opportunity when Blake Hetherington was put in the box for abuse of officials. Hackborn provided the assist. Ayr additionally got points from Richard, who also finished with one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Ayr included Ben Poort and Riley Clipper, who scored one goal each. In addition, Ayr received assists from Mac Kemp, Spencer Sweazy, Connor MacLean, and Jordan Pettitt, who each chipped in one.

Brayden Bruce recorded 46 saves for Wellesley. The Applejacks registered two goals on five power play opportunities. For Wellesley, Hetherington was ejected from the game. Ayr incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
