Norwich downs Wellesley in overtime, 5-4 (OT)Norwich Community Center Fri, Jan 10, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
The Norwich Merchants pulled out a 5-4 (OT) overtime victory over the Wellesley Applejacks on a clutch goal by Jordan Gillis. Norwich was paced on offense by Mitchell Berzins and Gillis, who combined for five points. Berzins racked up two goals and one assist and Gillis also notched one goal and two assists. Wellesley was unable to stop the Merchants from sending pucks towards the net, and Norwich eventually piled up 38 shots on goal. Team could not crack the Applejacks' penalty kill and was held to one power play goal while having 11 opportunities to play with the man advantage. Norwich also got points from Brandon Zimmermann, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, Todd Poirier, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Gillis, who also finished with one goal and two assists to lead the team in points, and Drake Morrell, who also racked up one goal and one assist. More assists for Norwich came via Todd Kemp, Derek Slaght, and Troy Lamoure, who contributed one a piece. Wellesley could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 30 minutes in penalties during the game. The Applejacks were helped by Brett MacDonald, who registered one goal. MacDonald scored short handed 6:19 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Taylor Doering assisted on the tally. Wellesley additionally got points from Alex Stoody, who also had one goal and one assist and Luke Rose, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Troy Williams also scored for Wellesley. In addition, Wellesley received assists from Josh Heer, who had one. Patrick Maziarz rejected 15 shots on goal for the Merchants. Norwich incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. The Merchants ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Braeden Shand was ejected from the game. Heer recorded 33 saves for Wellesley. The Applejacks registered one goal on four power play opportunities. For Wellesley, Chris Beauchene was ejected from the game.
