New Hamburg uses big second period to beat Burford, 12-2

The Burford Bulldogs was within striking distance after one period, but the New Hamburg Firebirds put the pedal down in the second en route to a 12-2 victory.

Kyle Mohr had two goals and three assists to lead New Hamburg. Mohr scored the first of his two goals at 15:18 into the first period to make the score 2-1 New Hamburg. David Jennings picked up the assist. Mohr's next tally made the score 7-2 New Hamburg with 8:28 left in the second period. The Firebirds had gained a power play chance when Jesse Brooks was whistled for inciting an opponent. Sean Kienapple provided the assist.

Burford's power play was ineffective against New Hamburg's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The Firebirds were often in penalty trouble, totaling 11 minors and one major for 47 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 31.0 minutes per game New Hamburg had been spending in the box. The Firebirds forced the Bulldogs' netminders to work between the pipes, firing 48 shots and forcing 36 saves. Riley Edwards made 27 stops and Nick Trask made nine. New Hamburg put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Burford to score on any of its nine power plays. The Firebirds surpassed their usual scoring output this season. New Hamburg averages 5.5 goals per game.

New Hamburg also got points from Kienapple, who also finished with two goals and three assists, Tyler Randerson, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, Kory Nowak, who also registered two goals and two assists, Kyle McDonald, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, and Brodie Muckler, who also finished with one goal and one assist. New Hamburg also got a goal from Carter Tracey as well. In addition, New Hamburg received assists from Jay Fried, Brandon Yantzi, Andrew Boer, and Garrett Pollock, who each chipped in one and Quinten Haddock and Tyler Hoffman, who contributed two a piece.

The the Bulldogs penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 12 minors and two majors for 54 minutes in penalty time. Burford surpassed its season average of 31.0 penalty minutes per game.

The Bulldogs were led by Kolby Francis, who racked up one goal. Francis scored 12:40 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Nolan Ferris picked up the assist. Chris Grand also scored for Burford. More assists for Burford came via Hugh Carson, who had one.

Eric Peicheff took the win and made 14 saves before being replaced by Ryan Purcell who made eight saves. The Firebirds registered five goals on 10 power play opportunities. For New Hamburg, Fried and Connor Voigt were ejected from the contest. Team's Blaise Burtnick and Carson were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
