New Hamburg shrugs off penalties, upends Ayr, 6-1

Despite having to fight off several power plays, the New Hamburg Firebirds were able to defeat the Ayr Centennials, 6-1.

New Hamburg was sparked by Carter Tracey, who finished with one goal. Tracey scored 12:36 into the first period to make the score 2-0 New Hamburg.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 16:32 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

The Firebirds were often in penalty trouble, totaling 10 minors and two majors for 50 minutes in penalty time. New Hamburg had been averaging 35.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Firebirds forced Ayr goalie Lee Doherty to work between the pipes, taking 38 shots.

New Hamburg also got points from Taylor Wood, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. New Hamburg also had goals scored by Kyle Mohr, who had one and Matt Yantzi, who had three. Other players who recorded assists for New Hamburg were Brandon Yantzi, who had three and Sean Kienapple, Quinten Haddock, and Garrett Pollock, who each chipped in one.

The Centennials stifled New Hamburg's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Ayr was held below its usual level of production. The Centennials put an average of 4.0 pucks into the net per game. Ayr's defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. The Centennials give up 2.4 goals per game. Ayr was hit hard by penalties in the contest, and totaled seven minors and two majors for 24 minutes in penalty time.

Brendan Schaefer also scored for Ayr. More assists for Ayr came via Ben Poort, who had one.

Eric Peicheff recorded 23 saves for the Firebirds. New Hamburg registered zero goals on three power play opportunities. Team's Pollock and Tracey were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Doherty rejected 32 shots on goal for the Centennials. Ayr registered one goal on eight power play opportunities. For the Centennials, Jordan Kerr, Eric Hackborn, and Doherty were ejected from the contest.
