Woodstock's comeback falls short, Norwich wins 5-3

The Norwich Merchants, who led by four goals at one point, survived a comeback attempt by Norwich and clinched a 5-3 victory.

The Merchants led by four goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when Norwich's Braeden Shand's scored at 5:27 in the second period to put the Merchants up 4-0.

Norwich forced the Woodstock Navy Vets goalie Michael Roefs to work between the pipes, taking 44 shots.

The Merchants were helped by Drake Morrell, who had one goal. Morrell scored 15:39 into the third period to make the score 5-3 Norwich. Others who scored for Norwich included Kurtis Lavis, Derek Slaght, and Brandon Morrow, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Norwich were Todd Poirier, who had one.

Woodstock kept Norwich's goalie busy throughout the game, and Zac Easveld made 33 saves on 36 shots.

The Navy Vets were led by Kyle Robertson, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Robertson scored on the power play 6:47 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Norwich. Woodstock had gotten the advantage when the Merchants' Zach Couwenberg was sent off for cross checking. Jake Schneider assisted on the tally. Woodstock also had goals scored by Justin Elms and Tyler Brown, who scored one goal each. More assists for Woodstock came via Michael Nutt, Matt Jauernig, and Taylor DeClercq, who each chipped in one.

Norwich incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Michael Roefs made 39 saves for the Navy Vets on 44 shots. Woodstock incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
