Tavistock beats Woodstock 5-3 after comeback scare

The Woodstock Navy Vets tried to dig themselves out of a four-goal hole, but the Tavistock Braves held on for a 5-3 victory.

A goal by Tyson Zehr AP put Tavistock up 5-1 in the third period, but Woodstock pulled to within two on Justin Elms's tally 19:49 into the third period.

Jeremy Munro had two goals to lead the Braves to victory. Munro scored on the power play at 6:12 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Tavistock and again while on the power play 17:37 into the second to make the score 4-1 Tavistock.

Tavistock's offense rang up 48 shots on the Navy Vets' net. The Braves surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Tavistock has scored at the pace of 2.9 goals per game during the current campaign.

Tavistock also had goals scored by Mackenzie Kalbfleisch and Charlie Irwin, who scored one goal each. More assists for Tavistock came via Matthew Lupton, who had two and Terran Rogers, Neals Vanweley, Nick Quehl, Derek Cowing, Tristan Hohl, and Drew Wagler, who each chipped in one.

Woodstock was led by Brandon Velda, who registered two goals. Velda scored the first of his two goals at 5:11 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Tavistock. Dan Haig provided the assist. Velda's next tally made the score 5-2 Tavistock with 6:48 left in the third period. Darcey Butler assisted on the tally. Other players who recorded assists for Woodstock were Matt Jauernig and Tyler Bell, who contributed one a piece.

The Braves' Trevor Bloch stopped 17 shots out of the 20 that he faced. Tavistock incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. Michael Roefs made 43 saves for the Navy Vets on 48 shots. Woodstock incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors. The Navy Vets ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Kyle Robertson was ejected from the game.
