Topeka survives Amarillo comeback, wins 4-3

The Amarillo Bulls tried to dig themselves out of a three-goal hole, but the Topeka RoadRunners held on for a 4-3 victory.

A goal by Cody Champagne put Topeka up 4-1 in the second period, but Amarillo pulled to within one on Carter Penzien's tally 16:52 into the third period.

Tyler Poulsen was all over the ice for the RoadRunners, as he registered two goals in the win. Poulsen's tallies came on the power play at 1:45 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Topeka and 9:10 into the second to make the score 3-1 Topeka.

Topeka's offense rang up 33 shots on the Bulls' net. The RoadRunners' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Topeka finished with 24 penalty minutes.

Topeka also got points from Sly Sutter, who also racked up one goal and one assist. In addition, Topeka received assists from Mike Gornall, Peter Halash, and Ryan Polin, who contributed one a piece and Jake Kamrass and Jasen Fernsler, who each chipped in two.

Amarillo forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. The Bulls had been averaging 25.0 minutes in penalties per game. With 30 shots on target during the contest, Amarillo exceeded the 27.1 shots it averages per game this year. The Bulls had trouble converting on the power play advantage, managing just two goals on nine chances.

Amarillo was helped by Timmy Moore, who grabbed one goal. Moore scored on the power play 1:36 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Topeka. Kyle Gattelaro assisted on the tally. Roman Ammirato also scored for Amarillo. More assists for Amarillo came via Brendan Vetter, Brendan McGuire, Cody Gylling, Mike Davis, and Cameron Cooper, who contributed one a piece.

The RoadRunners' PJ Bridges stopped 27 shots out of the 30 that he faced. Topeka registered one goal on six power play opportunities. Paul Berrafato rejected 29 shots on goal for the Bulls. Amarillo ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Gattelaro was ejected from the game.
