Rio Grande Valley uses shootout to best Lone Star, 3-2 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees defeated the Lone Star Brahmas in a shootout 3-2 (2-1 SO).

The shootout featured nine attempts between both teams. Lone Star's shootout goal was scored by RJ Salvato. In addition to the clincher, Rio Grande Valley got a shootout goal from Aleksi Luhtalampi.

The Killer Bees saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. Rio Grande Valley made the score 2-0 on a goal by Kevin Clare at 14:47 in the first period. The Brahmas evened things up at 2-2 on a goal by Alexey Solovyev at 10:13 in the third period.

The Killer Bees racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with five minors and three majors for 35 minutes in penalty time. Rio Grande Valley had been averaging 18.0 minutes in penalties per game.

The Killer Bees were helped by Luhtalampi, who registered one goal. Luhtalampi scored on the power play 11:12 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Rio Grande Valley. Rio Grande Valley had gotten the advantage when Lone Star's Sebastian Vidmar was sent off for boarding. Ben Greiner picked up the assist. In addition, Rio Grande Valley received assists from Jared Dedenbach and Sean Mostrom, who each chipped in one.

The Brahmas forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up five minors and three majors for 35 minutes in penalty time. Lone Star surpassed its season average of 25.0 penalty minutes per game. The Brahmas did not challenge the opposing goalie, launching only 12 shots on net to force 10 saves. Team.mascot's final shot tally was well below the team's average of 15.6 pucks on net per game. Lone Star's defensemen also contributed in the offensive zone and ended up with six shots between them.

Lone Star additionally got points from Matt Lison, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Other players who recorded assists for Lone Star were Anthony Mousseau, Salvato, and Jan Hudecek, who contributed one a piece.

Nick Schmit recorded 10 saves for the Killer Bees. Rio Grande Valley registered one goal on three power play opportunities. The Brahmas' TJ Black stopped 17 shots out of the 19 that he faced. Lone Star registered one goal on three power play opportunities.
