Brookings uses early goal to top Austin, 3-1

The Brookings Blizzard took the lead against the Austin Bruins in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 3-1 victory.

A goal 6:42 into the the first period by Eric Brenk proved to be the game winner, and powered Brookings to the victory Michelle Marchetti assisted on the tally.

Austin was stymied by the Blizzard netminder Drew Weigman, who stopped 37 shots during the victory. Weigman managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.98 prior to the game.

Brookings' penalty kill excelled, as the Blizzard gave up zero goals despite allowing six power plays.

Brookings stifled the Bruins' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The defense for the Blizzard played an important role offensively, racking up 16 shots on goal. The 39 shots that Brookings put on net surpassed the Blizzard's average of 29.0 shots per game this season.

Brookings was helped by Beau Michaud, who finished with one goal. Michaud scored 19:36 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Brookings. Brookings also got a goal from Evan Hesse as well. In addition, Brookings received assists from Conor Andrle, Jared Goudreau, and Branislav Rapac, who contributed one a piece.

Austin put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Blizzard to score on any of their three power plays. The Bruins' offense operated below they season average. Austin averages 3.2 goals per game. The Bruins' offense rang up 38 shots on Brookings' net.

Austin was led by Austin Nelson, who scored the team's only goal. Nelson scored zero seconds into the second period to make the score 2-1 Brookings. Jay Dickman picked up the assist.

The Blizzard incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Nicholas Lehr rejected 36 shots on goal for the Bruins. Austin incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
