Amarillo uses early goal to top Rio Grande Valley, 5-3

The Amarillo Bulls took the lead against the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 5-3 victory.

Brendan Vetter provided Amarillo with the game-winning tally when he scored 16:59 into the the first period. The Bulls had taken the advantage when Rio Grande Valley's Trent Dillinger got sent off for too many men. Cody Gylling picked up the assist.

Amarillo got the win on the strength of a great game by Tyler Gernhofer, who had two goals and two assists. Gernhofer scored the first of his two goals at 10:13 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Amarillo. Mitchell McPherson assisted on the tally. Gernhofer's next tally made the score 3-1 Amarillo with 19:19 left in the second period. Matt Sieckhaus provided the assist.

Amarillo also got points from Mike Davis, who also registered one goal and one assist. Brady Ferguson also scored for Amarillo.

The Killer Bees' offense was clicking better than usual and put 28 shots on goal during the game, better than the 24.6 shots per game they average. Rio Grande Valley's defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. The Killer Bees average 2.3 goals allowed per game.

Rio Grande Valley was helped by Austin Hoff, who tallied one goal. Hoff scored 14:17 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Cam Ashley picked up the assist. Rio Grande Valley additionally got points from Evan Schmidbauer, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Rio Grande Valley also got a goal from Ben Greiner as well. In addition, Rio Grande Valley received assists from Tyler Bruneteau, Dylan Abood, Sean Mostrom, and Nick Balboa, who contributed one a piece.

The Bulls' Paul Berrafato stopped 25 shots out of the 28 that he faced. Amarillo incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Olli Kalkaja made six saves before being replaced by Nick Schmit, who took the loss and made 14 saves. The Killer Bees incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
