Michigan beats Brookings 3-1 after comeback scare

Schwan SR-1    Wed, Sep 18, 2013

The Michigan Warriors survived a determined comeback attempt by the Brookings Blizzard on the way to a 3-1 win.

Michigan made the score 3-0 on a goal by Joshua Shellman at 42 seconds in the third period, and Brookings got as close as 3-1 when Eric Brenk scored 16:09 into the third period.

The Blizzard were stymied by the Warriors netminder Trevor Gorsuch, who stopped 38 shots during the victory. Even though Gorsuch played well, his goals against average suffered, as his one goal against exceeded his season average of 1.0.

The Michigan penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled seven minors and one major for 19 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 16.0 minutes per game the Warriors had been spending in the box. The 28 shots that Michigan put on net surpassed the Warriors' average of 22.5 shots per game this season.

Michigan was helped by Colin Horton, who registered one goal. Horton scored 8:02 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Michigan. Scott Cuthrell assisted on the tally. Michigan also got a goal from AJ Marcinek as well. More assists for Michigan came via Ryan Dougherty, Mitchell Wedding, and Jon Farkas, who each chipped in one.

Brookings' offense rang up 39 shots on the Warriors' net.

Other players who recorded assists for Brookings were Evan Hesse and Nick DeCenzo, who contributed one a piece.

Michigan registered one goal on four power play opportunities. Drew Weigman recorded 25 saves for the Blizzard. Brookings totaled 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 1-for-7 on the power play.
