Toledo uses shootout to best Michigan, 3-2 (3-2 SO)Team Toledo Ice House Fri, Jan 24, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Toledo Cherokee defeated the Michigan Mountain Cats in a shootout 3-2 (3-2 SO). The shootout featured 28 attempts between both teams. Michigan's shootout goals were scored by Austin Buchholz and Daniel Bachynsky. In addition to the clincher, Toledo got shootout goals from Zachary Armstrong and Austin Turner.The Cherokee put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Mountain Cats to score on any of their three power plays. Toledo forced Michigan goalie Joe Lopez to work between the pipes, taking 53 shots. The defensemen of the Cherokee were also effective in the Mountain Cats' zone, and came away with two goals. Toledo was helped by Kyler Omey, who registered one goal. Omey scored 2:27 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Toledo. Aaron Roschinsky picked up the assist. Hudson Sabin also scored for Toledo. In addition, Toledo received assists from Simon Joselwitsch, who had two. Michigan stifled the Cherokee's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Mountain Cats were helped by Mathieu Ouellette, who tallied one goal. Ouellette scored 18:32 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Max Vance assisted on the tally. Michigan also got a goal from Zach Collins as well. Other players who recorded assists for Michigan were John Arms and Kade Morrison, who contributed one a piece. Aaron Callan rejected 20 shots on goal for Toledo. The Cherokee incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Joe Lopez made 50 saves for Michigan on 52 shots. The Mountain Cats incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
