Granite City rolls over Topeka, 11-3

The Granite City Lumberjacks had a five-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to an 11-3 win over the Topeka Capitals.

Drew Otto had one goal and three assists to lead Granite City. Otto scored on the power play 8:18 into the third period to make the score 10-2 Granite City. The Lumberjacks had gotten the advantage when Topeka's Nolan Stanley was sent off for cross checking. David Horsmann picked up the assist.

The Capitals' 11 penalties came back to haunt them, as Topeka let up six goals while on the penalty kill.

Granite City racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with six minors and two majors for 22 minutes in penalty time. The Lumberjacks surpassed its season average of 17.0 penalty minutes per game. Granite City forced the Capitals goalie Jude Hull to work between the pipes, taking 45 shots. The Lumberjacks bested their season scoring average. Granite City has scored at the pace of 5.7 goals per game during the current campaign. The Lumberjacks' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in four goals.

Granite City additionally got points from Aidan Verbeke, who also registered one goal and two assists, Mitchell Gwost, who also finished with one goal and one assist, Alex Carson, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, Horsmann, who also had three goals and one assist, and Christian Mohs, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Granite City also had goals scored by Gavin Porter, Tobias Gabrielsen, and Zac Sikich, who each put in one. More assists for Granite City came via Billy Warren, Tim Brown, and Aaron Storch, who each chipped in one and Hunter Schneider and Morgan Martelle, who contributed two a piece.

Topeka struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as it finished the game with 31 penalty minutes for eight opposing power plays.

The Capitals were led by Yu Kikosaka, who registered one goal and one assist. Kikosaka scored on the power play 2:17 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Granite City. Topeka had gained a power play chance when Storch was whistled for slashing. Nick Rizzo assisted on the tally. Others who scored for Topeka included Nick Manney and Brandon Hawkins, who scored one goal each.

Granite City's Scott Murray stopped 16 shots out of the 19 that he faced. Jude Hull made 34 saves for the Capitals on 45 shots. Topeka registered one goal on five power play opportunities.
