Battle Creek uses early goal to top Topeka, 4-3

The Battle Creek Revolution beat the Topeka Capitals, 4-3, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Battle Creek took over the lead for good with a goal by Michael Schmitt at 10:34 in the first period.

The Revolution got the win on the strength of a great game by Schmitt, who had two goals and one assist. Schmitt scored the first of his two goals at 58 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Battle Creek. Derek Dodge assisted on the tally. Schmitt's next tally made the score 2-1 Battle Creek with 9:26 left in the first period.

Topeka's power play was ineffective against Battle Creek's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

The Revolution outdid their season average for goals scored. This season, Battle Creek averages 1.2 goal per contest.

Battle Creek also had goals scored by Chris McCausland and Eric Stewart, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Battle Creek were River Ward, Hampton Hastings, and Blake Thompson, who contributed one a piece.

The Capitals put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Revolution to score on any of their eight power plays. Topeka's offense rang up 43 shots on Battle Creek's net. The Capitals could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 30 minutes in penalties during the game.

Topeka was led by Hardijis Kupaks, who racked up one goal and one assist. Kupaks scored 10:18 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Griffin Leach picked up the assist. Others who scored for Topeka included Nolan Stanley and Nick Manney, who scored one goal each. In addition, Topeka received assists from Yu Kikosaka, Nick Rizzo, Trenton Faber, and Jaydn Munnelly, who each chipped in one.

Zach Kooi made 40 saves for the Revolution on 43 shots. Battle Creek incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Mike McElroy recorded 15 saves for the Capitals.
