North Iowa beats Alexandria 7-5 as Marenis gets hat trick

Richie Marenis netted a hat trick to lead the North Iowa Bulls over the Alexandria Blizzard, 7-5.

Marenis notched his first tally 7:33 into the first period. He then added goals at 12:09 into the first and at 15:06 into the third.

North Iowa led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Bulls' Timothy Santopoalo's scored at 15:11 in the second period to put North Iowa up 5-2.

The Bulls' penalty kill excelled, as North Iowa gave up one goal despite allowing six power plays.

Alexandria was unable to stop the Bulls from sending pucks towards the net, and North Iowa eventually piled up 34 shots on goal. The Bulls' defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. North Iowa is averaging 1.9 goal against for the season.

North Iowa additionally got points from Matt Kroska, who also registered two goals and three assists to lead the team in points and Santopoalo, who also racked up one goal and three assists. North Iowa also got a goal from Logan Murphy as well. In addition, North Iowa received assists from Matthew Kaitchuck, who had one and Ron Lindgren, who had four.

The Blizzard were helped by Joe Anderson, who had two goals and two assists. Anderson scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 3:23 into the third period to make the score 5-4 North Iowa. Alexandria had gotten the advantage when the Bulls' Kyle Krueger was sent off for too many men. Aaron Ryback picked up the assist. Anderson's next tally on the power play made the score 5-5 with 13:06 left in the third period. Ian Ecklund assisted on the tally. Alexandria also got points from Ecklund, who also grabbed one goal and three assists. Jake Maxson also scored for Alexandria. More assists for Alexandria came via Bo Gronseth, who had two and Bryce Mitzel and Jody Randall, who contributed one a piece.

Jared Schletty rejected 25 shots on goal for North Iowa. The Bulls incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. Evan Bisek recorded 27 saves for the Blizzard. Alexandria incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors.
