Toledo rips Pittsburgh, 5-1

The Toledo Cherokee were firing on all cylinders against the Pittsburgh Vengeance, and when the final buzzer sounded Cherokee emerged with a 5-1 win.

Toledo got the win on the strength of a great game by Tyler Zalecki, who had one goal and three assists. Zalecki scored 11:22 into the first period to make the score 3-0 Toledo. Dominic Antonelli picked up the assist.

The Cherokee's penalty kill excelled, as Toledo gave up one goal despite allowing nine power plays.

The Cherokee forced Pittsburgh's goalies to work between the pipes, racking up 46 shots and forcing 41 saves. Jason Kumpfmiller made seven stops and Tyler Geloneck made 34. Toledo bested its season scoring average. This season, the Cherokee average 2.5 goals per contest. Toledo had trouble converting on the power play advantage, managing just two goals on nine chances. The Cherokee's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Toledo finished with 26 penalty minutes.

Toledo also got points from David Bogart, who also registered one goal and one assist, Austin Turner, who also tallied one goal and one assist, and Brett Podgorski, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Toledo also got a goal from Noah Szenderski as well. More assists for Toledo came via Kyler Omey, who had one.

The Vengeance could not produce up to they normal offensive output. Pittsburgh averages 3.5 goals per game. The Vengeance were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 38 penalty minutes.

Gavin Cummings also scored for Pittsburgh. In addition, Pittsburgh received assists from Brooks Antill and Brennan Conway, who contributed one a piece.

Aaron Callan recorded 15 saves for the Cherokee.
