Flint erases deficit to stun Pittsburgh, 4-3

Undaunted by a three-goal deficit, the Flint Junior Generals battled back to claim a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Vengeance.

Flint never led in the game until netting the game winner. The Junior Generals trailed 3-0 after a goal by Pittsburgh's Brennan Conway at 1:22 in the second period. Flint tied things up at 3-3 on a power play goal by Conner McGovern at 7:17 in the third period. The Junior Generals scored the game winner at 12:09 in the third period on a goal by McGovern.

The Vengeance's power play was ineffective against Flint's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

The Junior Generals forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. Flint had been averaging 26.0 minutes in penalties per game. Pittsburgh was unable to stop the Junior Generals from sending pucks towards the net, and Flint eventually piled up 51 shots on goal.

The Junior Generals were helped by Nicholas Gnagni, who grabbed one goal. Flint also got points from McGovern, who also finished with one goal and two assists. Mark McGee also scored for Flint. In addition, Flint received assists from Trevor Benaglio, who had three and Reno de Hondt, Brett Leppek, and Justin Fisher, who contributed one a piece.

The the Vengeance penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. Pittsburgh surpassed its season average of 13.0 penalty minutes per game. The Vengeance's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

Pittsburgh was helped by Michael Straub, who registered one goal. Straub scored on the power play 21 seconds into the second period to make the score 2-0 Pittsburgh. Oskar Thorsen assisted on the tally. Pittsburgh also got a goal from Cody Black as well. More assists for Pittsburgh came via Lukas Friberger and Tyler Speis, who each chipped in one.

Anders Franke rejected 19 shots on goal for Flint. The Junior Generals registered three goals on seven power play opportunities. Flint ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Luke Dmytro was ejected from the game. Jason Kumpfmiller recorded 47 saves for the Vengeance. For Pittsburgh, Friberger was ejected from the game.
