xWelland wins tough contest against xThorold, 4-2

The xWelland Jr. Canadians gutted out a close 4-2 win against the xThorold Blackhawks.

xWelland gained the winning advantage on a goal by Bryan Komasara 5:41 into the second period and hung on until final buzzer.

Adam Mataya was all over the ice for the Jr. Canadians, as he racked up two goals in the win. Mataya's tallies came at 4:18 into the first period to make the score 1-0 xWelland and 19:23 into the second to make the score 4-2 xWelland.

xWelland also got a goal from Brayden Stortz as well. In addition, xWelland received assists from Matthew Mateljan, who had three and Jack Fitzgerald, Jason Lacroix, and Jimmy Sheehan, who each chipped in one.

xThorold did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. The Blackhawks put an average of 4.3 pucks into the net per game. xThorold forced xWelland goalie Jeffrey Heartwell to work between the pipes, taking 41 shots.

The Blackhawks were helped by Joe Mitchell, who racked up one goal and one assist. Mitchell scored 19:50 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Kevin Millejours picked up the assist. xThorold also got points from Owen Sobchak, who also finished with one goal and one assist. More assists for xThorold came via Carl Greco, who had one.

Heartwell recorded 39 saves for the Jr. Canadians. xWelland incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. xThorold's Brendan Polasek stopped 25 shots out of the 29 that he faced. The Blackhawks incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. xThorold ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Millejours was ejected from the game.
