Velluci stymies Guelph, Brampton wins 5-1

Chris Velluci had a standout game with 34 saves, and the Brampton Bombers beat the Guelph Hurricanes 5-1.

Brampton pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 38 penalty minutes.

The Bombers were sparked by Ian Nichols, who racked up one goal and one assist. Nichols scored 1:10 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Brampton. Brad Sheppard provided the assist.

Brampton forced Guelph goalie Bradley Van Schubert to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots.

Brampton also got points from Chris Maione, who also registered one goal and one assist and Sheppard, who also finished with one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Brampton also had goals scored by Cameron Cruickshank and Jason Smith, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Brampton were Mark Shoemaker, Connor Andersen, Phil Caputo, Nick McNutt, and Brandon Clelland, who each chipped in one.

The Hurricanes' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Brampton power plays. Guelph could not produce up to it normal offensive output. The Hurricanes put an average of 3.2 pucks into the net per game. Guelph's offense rang up 35 shots on the Bombers' net.

The Hurricanes were led by Jordan Hatzinger, who scored the team's only goal. Hatzinger scored on the power play 13:20 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Guelph had taken the advantage when Brampton's Greg Wilson got sent off for hooking. Patrick Kudla assisted on the tally.

Van Schubert recorded 27 saves for the Hurricanes. Guelph totaled 33 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 1-for-8 on the power play. For the Hurricanes, Noah Carroll was ejected from the game.
