Ancaster beats Welland 6-5 after comeback scare

The Welland Jr. Canadians tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Ancaster Avalanche held on for a 6-5 victory.

A goal by Blake Luscombe put Ancaster up 5-3 in the third period, but Welland pulled to within one on Matthew Mateljan's tally 15:44 into the third period.

The Avalanche's offense rang up 34 shots on the Jr. Canadians' net. Ancaster bested its season scoring average. The Avalanche average 3.7 goals per game.

Ancaster was led by Michael Pollice, who racked up two goals. Pollice scored the first of his two goals at 4:18 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Welland. Dustin Chenier picked up the assist. Pollice's next tally made the score 4-3 Ancaster with 8:30 left in the third period. Ryan Lewis assisted on the tally. Ancaster also got points from Luscombe, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Luke Zupan, who also tallied one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Ancaster also had goals scored by Max Balinson and Hayden Guitard, who each put in one. In addition, Ancaster received assists from Eric Eustace and Jake Milligan, who each chipped in one and Jake Bain and Zach Nieminen, who contributed two a piece.

Welland's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Ancaster power plays. The Jr. Canadians kept the Avalanche's goalie busy throughout the game, and Matt Calas made 29 saves on 34 shots.

Welland additionally got points from Brayden Stortz, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Jack Fitzgerald also scored for Welland. Other players who recorded assists for Welland were Matt Cuglietta, who had two and Jonathan Goldsworthy, Bryan Komasara, Adam Barron, Damien Lalonde, and Gabe Ruggi, who each chipped in one.

Ancaster ended with 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. The Avalanche ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Milligan was ejected from the game. Jeffrey Heartwell made 28 saves for Welland on 34 shots. The Jr. Canadians totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 2-for-5 on the power play. For Welland, Christian DiFonzo and Jason Lacroix were ejected from the contest.
