Niagara Falls penalty kill dominates in 7-4 defeat of Port Colborne

The Port Colborne Pirates failed to take advantage of their power play opportunities and the Niagara Falls Canucks shook off a number of penalties to win, 7-4.

Niagara Falls was led by Mitch McIntosh, who finished with one goal and one assist. McIntosh scored 8:24 into the third period to make the score 5-3 Niagara Falls. Brooker Muir picked up the assist.

The Canucks' offense rang up 43 shots on Port Colborne's net. Niagara Falls surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Canucks average 4.3 goals per game. Niagara Falls was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 34 penalty minutes.

Niagara Falls also got points from Muir, who also registered one goal and one assist and Vito Scaringi, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Niagara Falls also had goals scored by Cole Vinnai, who had two and Johnny Curran and Austin Wright, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Niagara Falls were MacKenzie Wood, Tory McLean, Sean Farquharson, Nolan Dunn, and Marcus Michalski, who each chipped in one and Garrett Gallardi and Vittorio Giannico, who contributed two each.

The Pirates forced the Canucks goalie Emerson Verrier to work between the pipes, taking 39 shots. Port Colborne could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 38 minutes in penalties during the game.

The Pirates were led by Brock Ackerman, who tallied one goal and one assist. Ackerman scored 16:36 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Cody Levasseur provided the assist. Port Colborne additionally got points from Levasseur, who also had one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Port Colborne included Spencer Fox and Mat White, who scored one goal each. In addition, Port Colborne received assists from Matt Ceko, James Mense-Detrich, and RJ Sciarrone, who each chipped in one.

Niagara Falls' Verrier stopped 35 shots out of the 39 that he faced. The Canucks registered one goal on eight power play opportunities. Niagara Falls ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Denis Creighton was ejected from the game. Marcus Hlywka recorded 36 saves for Port Colborne. The Pirates registered one goal on six power play opportunities. For Port Colborne, Alex Carlson was ejected from the game.
