Welland wins tough contest against Ancaster, 4-2Morgan Firestone Sat, Feb 08, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
The Welland Jr. Canadians and the Ancaster Avalanche were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Welland made the most of its opportunities and won, 4-2. The Jr. Canadians gained the winning advantage on a goal by Bryan Komasara 10:36 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer. Ancaster's power play was ineffective against Welland's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded. The Jr. Canadians were led by Komasara, who registered one goal and one assist. Welland excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in seven chances. Welland also got points from Jeremy Hopkins, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Adam Mataya, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Welland also got a goal from Cole McKnight as well. More assists for Welland came via Connor Walters, Damien Lalonde, Matthew Mateljan, and Brayden Stortz, who each chipped in one. The Avalanche stifled the Jr. Canadians' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Ancaster was helped by Ryan Lewis, who grabbed one goal. Lewis scored 16:45 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Ancaster. Blake Luscombe picked up the assist. Max Balinson also scored for Ancaster. Other players who recorded assists for Ancaster were Aaron St Pierre, who had one. Jeffrey Heartwell rejected 23 shots on goal for Welland. The Jr. Canadians incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Welland ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Matt Cuglietta was ejected from the game. Matt Calas recorded 21 saves for the Avalanche. Ancaster incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
