Cuglietta leads Welland over Port Colborne, 9-5

Behind a great game by Matt Cuglietta, who had four goals and one assist, the Welland Jr. Canadians defeated the Port Colborne Pirates, 9-5.

Cuglietta notched his first tally 9:05 into the second period. He then added goals at 15:00 into the second, at 17:34 into the second, and at 1:02 into the third.

Welland's penalty kill excelled, as the Jr. Canadians gave up one goal despite allowing eight power plays.

Welland forced Port Colborne's goalies to work all game long, racking up 45 shots and forcing 36 saves. Braeden Thoms made 21 stops and Jake Danson made 15. The Jr. Canadians bested their season scoring average. Welland averages 3.5 goals per game. The Jr. Canadians cashed in on power play opportunities, scoring two goals on three chances.

Welland additionally got points from Jason Lacroix, who also finished with one goal and two assists, Bryan Komasara, who also had two goals and one assist, Matthew Mateljan, who also registered one goal and two assists, and Brayden Stortz, who also tallied one goal and one assist. In addition, Welland received assists from Jimmy Sheehan, who had two, Adam Mataya, who had four, and Cole McKnight, Connor Walters, Adam Barron, and Tyler Stranges, who each chipped in one.

The Pirates forced Welland goalie Chris Janzen to work between the pipes, taking 34 shots. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

Chris Janzen made 29 saves for the Jr. Canadians on 34 shots. Welland incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Port Colborne incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
