Stortz leads Welland over Niagara Falls, 5-2

The Welland Jr. Canadians' Brayden Stortz had a big offensive game, scoring one goal and contributing two assists in his team's 5-2 win over the Niagara Falls Canucks.

Stortz beat Dylan Pietrangelo with a shot 1:18 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Welland. Jimmy Sheehan assisted on the tally. Stortz dished an assist on Damien Lalonde's goal that made the score 1-0 Welland at 2:03 into the first period. He added another helper on Adam Mataya's goal that made the score 5-2 Welland at 7:44 into the third period.

Welland pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 39 penalty minutes.

The Jr. Canadians made Niagara Falls' goalies to work without much rest, getting 38 shots and forcing 33 saves. Pietrangelo made 33 stops and Emerson Verrier made zero. Welland excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in seven chances.

Welland also got points from Lalonde, who also had one goal and one assist. Bryan Komasara also scored for Welland. More assists for Welland came via Gabe Ruggi, who had two and Jack Fitzgerald, Matt Cuglietta, and Matthew Mateljan, who each chipped in one.

The Canucks were held below their usual level of production. Niagara Falls averages 4.2 goals per game. The Jr. Canadians were unable to stop the Canucks from sending pucks towards the net, and Niagara Falls eventually piled up 40 shots on goal. The Canucks were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 54 penalty minutes.

Niagara Falls was helped by Cole Langan, who finished with one goal. Langan scored 3:16 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Welland. Chris Harpur picked up the assist. Niagara Falls also got a goal from Cole Vinnai as well. In addition, Niagara Falls received assists from MacKenzie Wood, Vito Scaringi, and Denis Creighton, who contributed one a piece.

Jeffrey Heartwell made 38 saves for Welland on 40 shots. The Jr. Canadians registered one goal on six power play opportunities. Welland ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Ruggi was ejected from the game. For the Canucks, Tory McLean and Verrier were ejected from the contest.
