Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Guelph Hurricanes defeated the Kitchener Dutchmen in a shootout 4-3 (1-0 SO). The shootout featured five attempts between both teams.Guelph came back from a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Hurricanes fell behind 2-0 after a power play goal by Kitchener's Keli Grant at 3:41 in the second period. Guelph knotted things up at 3-3 on a goal by Keegan Calder at 19:24 in the third period. Matt Nightingale had two goals to lead the Hurricanes to victory. Nightingale found the back of the net 15:45 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Kitchener and again while 4:41 into the third to make the score 3-2 Guelph. The Dutchmen were unable to stop Guelph from sending pucks towards the net, and the Hurricanes eventually piled up 39 shots on goal. Craig Martini also scored for Guelph. More assists for Guelph came via Matt Lippa, who had one and Lawrence Pagnan and Jordan Hatzinger, who contributed two a piece. Kitchener forced Guelph goalie Bradley Van Schubert to work between the pipes, taking 38 shots. The Dutchmen's defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. Kitchener is averaging 1.9 goal against for the season. The Dutchmen were helped by Dylan Bursey, who had one goal. Bursey scored 34 seconds into the second period to make the score 1-0 Kitchener. Grant assisted on the tally. Kitchener additionally got points from Grant, who also registered one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Kitchener were Clayton Greer, who had two and Mac Nichol, Mitchell Smith, and Adam Kawelic(APM), who each chipped in one. The Hurricanes' Van Schubert stopped 35 shots out of the 38 that he faced. Guelph incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors and had no power play opportunities. Marc Williams recorded 35 saves for Kitchener. The Dutchmen finished the contest with no penalties and went 1-for-4 with the man advantage. |
