xWelland holds on for 5-4 win against xSt. Catharines

The xWelland Jr. Canadians survived a determined comeback attempt by the xSt. Catharines Falcons on the way to a 5-4 win.

xWelland took a 5-3 lead during the third period, only to have xSt. Catharines storm back on a Mitch Bursey goal 20:00 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

New Player had a great game for the Jr. Canadians, netting two goals.

xWelland kept the Falcons' goalie busy throughout the game, and Knick Dawe made 27 saves on 32 shots. The Jr. Canadians could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 24 minutes in penalties during the game.

xWelland also got points from Damien Lalonde, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Others who scored for xWelland included Adam Mataya and Brayden Stortz, who scored one goal each. In addition, xWelland received assists from Christian DiFonzo, Jason Lacroix, Jimmy Sheehan, and Matthew Mateljan, who each chipped in one.

xSt. Catharines stifled xWelland's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Jr. Canadians were unable to stop the Falcons from sending pucks towards the net, and xSt. Catharines eventually piled up 38 shots on goal.

The Falcons were led by Ryan Stayner, who racked up two goals. Stayner scored the first of his two goals at 14:55 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Kyle Woodhouse assisted on the tally. Stayner's next tally made the score 3-3 with 3:12 left in the second period. xSt. Catharines had gained a power play chance when Lalonde was whistled for holding. Aaron Taylor picked up the assist. xSt. Catharines additionally got points from Bursey, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Tommy Barszcz also scored for xSt. Catharines. Other players who recorded assists for xSt. Catharines were Yanni Rallis, Brandon Cercone, Dillan Walker, and Brennan Feasey, who contributed one a piece.

Jeffrey Heartwell recorded 34 saves for xWelland. The Jr. Canadians registered zero goals on seven power play opportunities. xWelland ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Matt Cuglietta was ejected from the game. The Falcons incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Team's Greg Jambrosich and Cam Blakely were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
