Welland Arena    Sun, Jan 26, 2014

The Welland Jr. Canadians had a two-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 5-1 win over the Port Colborne Pirates.

Port Colborne was stymied by Welland netminder Chris Janzen, who stopped 29 shots during the victory. Janzen managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.73 prior to the game.

Jonathan Goldsworthy had a great game for the Jr. Canadians, netting two goals. Goldsworthy's tallies came at 10:55 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Welland and 9:12 into the third to make the score 4-1 Welland.

Welland put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Pirates to score on any of their five power plays. Port Colborne was unable to stop the Jr. Canadians from sending pucks towards the net, and Welland eventually piled up 53 shots on goal. The Jr. Canadians' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

Welland also got points from Adam Mataya, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Jack Fitzgerald, who also registered one goal and one assist. Welland also got a goal from Max Cipriano as well. In addition, Welland received assists from Brayden Stortz, who had two and Cole McKnight, Adam Barron, Jimmy Sheehan, JC Thivienge, Damien Lalonde, and Gabe Ruggi, who each chipped in one.

The Pirates did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Port Colborne averages 3.1 goals per game. The Pirates' penalty kill unit could not stop Welland's power play, which converted on three of five opportunities. Port Colborne's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Pirates finished with 26 penalty minutes.

Port Colborne was led by Cody Levasseur, who scored the team's only goal. Levasseur scored 53 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Port Colborne. Brock Ackerman picked up the assist.

The Jr. Canadians incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Jake Danson rejected 48 shots on goal for the Pirates.
