Elmira vanquishes Guelph in shootout, 3-2 (2-1 SO)Sleeman Centre Sat, Jan 25, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Elmira Sugar Kings defeated the Guelph Hurricanes in a shootout 3-2 (2-1 SO). The shootout lasted for six attempts between the teams. Guelph's shootout goal was scored by Matt Lippa. Elmira also got a shootout goal from Brad Kobryn.The Sugar Kings came back from a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Elmira fell behind 2-1 after a goal by the Hurricanes' Lawrence Pagnan at 11:48 in the second period. The Sugar Kings knotted things up at 2-2 on a goal by Justin Cooke at 14:39 in the second period. Guelph's power play was ineffective against Elmira's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded. The Hurricanes were unable to stop the Sugar Kings from sending pucks towards the net, and Elmira eventually piled up 39 shots on goal. The Sugar Kings' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals. Elmira could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 38 minutes in penalties during the game. The Sugar Kings were helped by Adam Brubacher, who registered one goal. Brubacher scored on the power play 14:27 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Elmira. A cross checking penalty on Ian Chan had put Elmira on the power play. David Savery assisted on the tally. In addition, Elmira received assists from Kobryn, Steven Jakiela, and Matt Harding, who contributed one a piece. Guelph found itself short handed often, totaling 38 penalty minutes and allowing six power plays. The Hurricanes were helped by Ryan Migliaccio, who finished with one goal. Migliaccio scored on the power play 6:18 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Guelph had gained a power play chance when Cash Seraphim was whistled for goalie interference. Lippa picked up the assist. More assists for Guelph came via Sebastian Stangherlin and Chad Herron, who each chipped in one. Jonathan Reinhart made 26 saves for the Sugar Kings on 28 shots. Stormer Santana rejected 36 shots on goal for the Hurricanes.
