Guelph outlasts Brantford, 5-3Gretzky Main Rink Thu, Jan 23, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Guelph Hurricanes escaped with a 5-3 victory over the Brantford 99ers. No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Chad Herron at 9:03 of the third period. Herron had two goals to lead Guelph to victory. The Hurricanes pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 51 penalty minutes. Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 10:08 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts. Guelph forced Brantford goalie Andre Keire to work between the pipes, taking 31 shots. Guelph also got a goal from Matt Lippa as well. Other players who recorded assists for Guelph were Lawrence Pagnan, who had one, Sebastian Stangherlin, who had three, and Michael Courvoisier, Ryan Migliaccio, and Zach McFadden, who each chipped in two. The 99ers forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 11 minors and one major for 57 minutes in penalty time. Brantford had been averaging 22.0 minutes in penalties per game. The 99ers kept the Hurricanes' goalie busy throughout the game, and Bradley Van Schubert made 34 saves on 37 shots. Brantford was led by Paris Briscoe, who registered one goal and one assist. Briscoe scored 24 seconds into the second period to make the score 2-2. David Storey assisted on the tally. Others who scored for Brantford included John Nay and Cole Cummings, who scored one goal each. In addition, Brantford received assists from Leonard Dziemianko, who had two and Kevin Fitzpatrick and Guy Polillo, who contributed one a piece. Guelph registered three goals on eight power play opportunities. The Hurricanes ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Matt Nightingale was ejected from the game. Andre Keire made 26 saves for the 99ers on 31 shots. Brantford registered one goal on eight power play opportunities. Team's Nathan Ferris and Mitch Camacho were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
