Cambridge wins tough contest against Waterloo, 5-3

The Cambridge Winter Hawks and the Waterloo Siskins were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Cambridge made the most of its opportunities and won, 5-3.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Matt Pinder's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

Waterloo's power play was ineffective against the Winter Hawks' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Cambridge was led by Pinder, who tallied one goal and one assist. Pinder scored 18:48 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Cambridge. Adam Dauda picked up the assist.

The Winter Hawks forced the Siskins goalie Leo Lazarev to work between the pipes, taking 31 shots. Cambridge could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 30 minutes in penalties during the game.

Cambridge additionally got points from Dauda, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Hudson Michaelis, who also grabbed one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Cambridge also had goals scored by Devin Shell and Tyler Peters, who each put in one. In addition, Cambridge received assists from Marcellis Subban, Cody Gratton, Lucas Zitmanis, Kalob Witzell, and Alex Bottigoni, who contributed one a piece.

Waterloo put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Winter Hawks to score on any of their five power plays. The Siskins kept Cambridge's goalie busy throughout the game, and Darren Huck made 32 saves on 35 shots.

Waterloo was led by Ryan Taylor, who had one goal and one assist. Taylor scored 17:22 into the third period to make the score 3-3. Mitch Atkins provided the assist. Others who scored for Waterloo included Christian Mroczkowski and Evan Buehler, who scored one goal each. More assists for Waterloo came via Danny Hanlon, who had two.

The Winter Hawks ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Malcolm Bilton was ejected from the game. Lazarev rejected 26 shots on goal for the Siskins. Waterloo incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
