Kitchener holds on for 4-3 win against Cambridge

The Cambridge Winter Hawks tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Kitchener Dutchmen would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 4-3.

A goal by Dylan Bursey put Kitchener up 3-1 in the second period, but Cambridge pulled to within one on Malcolm Bilton's tally 6:00 into the third period.

Keli Grant had two goals and one assist to lead the Dutchmen. Grant scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 11:50 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Kitchener. Kitchener had gained a power play chance when Anthony Guido was whistled for cross checking. Mac Nichol provided the assist. Grant's next tally on the power play made the score 4-3 Kitchener with 11:29 left in the third period. Bursey assisted on the tally.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 9:31 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Dutchmen's offense rang up 46 shots on the Winter Hawks' net.

Kitchener additionally got points from Bursey, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Kitchener also got a goal from Matt Guild as well. In addition, Kitchener received assists from Gilbert Jared, Philip Moser, Mitchell Smith, Alex Demrovsky, and Clayton Greer, who each chipped in one.

The Cambridge penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. The Winter Hawks surpassed its season average of 22.0 penalty minutes per game. Cambridge kept Kitchener's goalie busy throughout the game, and Marc Williams made 30 saves on 33 shots.

Cambridge also got points from Cody Gratton, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for Cambridge came via Marcellis Subban, Alex Mills, Jake Moggy, Adam Dauda, and Matt Pinder, who contributed one a piece.

The Dutchmen totaled 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major and went 1-for-8 on the power play. Kitchener ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Greer was ejected from the game. Lucas Machalski made 42 saves for the Winter Hawks on 46 shots. Cambridge registered one goal on three power play opportunities. For the Winter Hawks, Dylan Decker was ejected from the game.
