Murphy's big game bests Fort Erie in 6-3 Caledonia win

Connor Murphy had one goal and four assists to lead the Caledonia Corvairs to a 6-3 victory over the Fort Erie Meteors.

Murphy scored on the power play 19:12 into the first period to make the score 2-2. Caledonia had gained a power play chance when Kyle Marino was whistled for cross checking. Cody Brown picked up the assist. Murphy dished an assist on Brown's goal that made the score 1-1 at 7:52 into the first period. He then added assists on Jeffrey Marlott's goal at 8:20 into the second, on Ryan Blunt's goal at 19:53 into the second, and on Marlott's goal at 1:09 into the third.

Fort Erie's power play was ineffective against the Corvairs' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 11:01 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

The Caledonia penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 10 minors and one major for 55 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 27.0 minutes per game the Corvairs had been spending in the box. Caledonia's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on nine Fort Erie power plays. The Corvairs forced the Meteors goalie Liam Conway to work between the pipes, taking 46 shots.

Caledonia also got points from Brown, who also finished with two goals and one assist. In addition, Caledonia received assists from Matt Quilty, who had four and Jordan Peacock, Colin Furlong, and Kyler Nixon, who each chipped in one.

Fort Erie racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with nine minors and three majors for 53 minutes in penalty time. The Meteors had been averaging 25.0 minutes in penalties per game.

Fort Erie was led by Braden Kavaratzis, who racked up two goals. Kavaratzis scored the first of his two goals at 48 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Fort Erie. Carson Johnstone assisted on the tally. Kavaratzis' next tally made the score 5-3 Caledonia with 7:47 left in the third period. Mike Boles also scored for Fort Erie. More assists for Fort Erie came via Jack Webb and Jesse Pereira, who contributed one a piece.

Furlong recorded 25 saves for Caledonia. The Corvairs registered two goals on 11 power play opportunities. Caledonia ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Spencer Gourlay was ejected from the game. The Meteors' Conway stopped 40 shots out of the 46 that he faced. For Fort Erie, Austin Carroll, Richard DeMarco, Aaron Wanat, Matt Marsden, and Marino were ejected from the contest.
