Stratford uses shootout to best Brantford, 3-2 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Stratford Cullitons defeated the Brantford 99ers in a shootout 3-2 (1-0 SO).

The shootout featured six attempts between both teams.

Stratford was paced by Mitch Vandergunst, who tallied one goal. Vandergunst scored 2:22 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Stratford. Nathan Templeman provided the assist.

In the losing effort, Brantford was led by Guy Polillo, who registered two goals. Polillo scored the first of his two goals at 18:27 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Brantford. Nathan Bastian picked up the assist. Polillo's next tally made the score 2-2 with 7:44 left in the third period. The 99ers played down a man on Scotty Penwarden's fighting. Bastian assisted on the tally.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 12:15 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Cullitons' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Brantford power plays. Stratford forced Brantford goalie Andre Keire to work between the pipes, taking 46 shots.

Trevor MacDonald also scored for Stratford. More assists for Stratford came via Dylan Wettlaufer and Ryker Killins, who each chipped in one.

The 99ers excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances.

Other players who recorded assists for Brantford were John Nay and Keegan Alvestad, who contributed one a piece.

Michael Pesendorfer recorded 16 saves for the Cullitons. Stratford ended with nine minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major. The Cullitons ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Nick Nigro was ejected from the game. Brantford's Keire stopped 43 shots out of the 45 that he faced. The 99ers ended with 28 minutes in penalty time with four minors and two majors. For Brantford, Mitch Camacho and Penwarden were ejected from the contest.
