Stratford survives penalties, beats Listowel, 5-2

The Listowel Cyclones failed to take advantage of their power play opportunities and the Stratford Cullitons shook off a number of penalties to win, 5-2.

Stratford forced Listowel goalie Daniel Dekoning to work between the pipes, taking 34 shots. The Cullitons' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

Stratford was helped by Jeff McArdle, who racked up one goal. McArdle scored 19:05 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Stratford. Brett Heaman assisted on the tally. Stratford also got points from Pat McKelvie(APJ), who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Stratford included Devon Kropf, Ryker Killins, and Drew Gross, who each put in one. More assists for Stratford came via Mitch Brooks, Jordan Currie, and Tyson Baker, who each chipped in one.

The Cyclones put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Cullitons to score on any of their four power plays. Listowel kept Stratford's goalie busy throughout the game, and Nick Caldwell made 29 saves on 31 shots.

The Cyclones were helped by Ben Shelley, who tallied one goal. Shelley scored on the power play 12:54 into the third period to make the score 3-1 Stratford. Listowel earned a power play opportunity when Brooks was put in the box for unsportsmanlike conduct. Derek Elliot picked up the assist. Listowel also got a goal from Kenny Huether as well. Other players who recorded assists for Listowel were Reid Simmons, Tim Nauta, and Kevin Gergley, who contributed one a piece.

The Cullitons incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Daniel Dekoning made 29 saves for the Cyclones on 32 shots. Listowel incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
