Stratford outlasts Brantford, 6-4Allman Arena Fri, Jan 10, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
The Stratford Cullitons gutted out a close 6-4 win against the Brantford 99ers. No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Mitch Vandergunst at 17:58 of the third period. With three goals and one assist between them, Drew Gross and Vandergunst teamed up to power Stratford's offense. Gross grabbed two goals and one assist and Vandergunst also added one goal. Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 15:01 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts. The Cullitons' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Brantford power plays. Stratford forced Brantford goalie Andre Keire to work between the pipes, taking 47 shots. The Cullitons outdid their season average for goals scored. Stratford has scored at the pace of 3.3 goals per game during the current campaign. The Cullitons' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Stratford finished with 24 penalty minutes. Stratford also got points from Trevor Sauder, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Nathan Templeman, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Jake Pleon also scored for Stratford. More assists for Stratford came via Dylan Wettlaufer, who had three and Josh Miller, Pat McKelvie(APJ), Mitch Brooks, Jordan Currie, and Trevor MacDonald, who contributed one a piece. The 99ers racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and two majors for 44 minutes in penalty time. Brantford surpassed its season average of 21.0 penalty minutes per game. The 99ers were led by Mitch Atkins, who registered two goals and one assist. Atkins scored the first of his two goals at 32 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Brantford. Keegan Alvestad provided the assist. Atkins' next tally made the score 2-1 Brantford with eight seconds left in the first period. Nathan Bastian assisted on the tally. Brantford additionally got points from Bastian, who also had one goal and one assist. Brantford also got a goal from John Nay as well. In addition, Brantford received assists from Guy Polillo, who had three and Paris Briscoe and Scotty Penwarden, who each chipped in one. Michael Pesendorfer made nine saves before being replaced by Nick Caldwell, who took the win and made eight saves. The Cullitons registered one goal on eight power play opportunities. For Stratford, Pleon and Tyson Baker were ejected from the contest. Andre Keire made 41 saves for Brantford on 46 shots. Team's Anthony Van Looyen and Briscoe were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
