Caledonia survives Niagara Falls comeback, wins 4-3

The Niagara Falls Canucks tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Caledonia Corvairs held on for a 4-3 victory.

Caledonia made the score 4-2 on a goal by Connor Murphy at 12:22 in the third period, and Niagara Falls got as close as 4-3 when MacKenzie Wood scored 19:48 into the third period.

Kyler Nixon had one goal and three assists to lead the Corvairs. Nixon scored on the power play 6:04 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Caledonia had gotten the advantage when the Canucks' Sean Farquharson was sent off for high sticking. Murphy picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 14:12 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Corvairs racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and three majors for 39 minutes in penalty time. Caledonia surpassed its season average of 26.0 penalty minutes per game. The Corvairs excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances. Caledonia forced Niagara Falls goalie Emerson Verrier to work between the pipes, taking 45 shots.

Caledonia additionally got points from Murphy, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Caledonia included Connor Patton and Mitch Brown, who scored one goal each. In addition, Caledonia received assists from Matt Quilty, who had two and Cody Brown and Ryan Blunt, who contributed one a piece.

The Canucks were often in penalty trouble, totaling nine minors and three majors for 43 minutes in penalty time. Niagara Falls had been averaging 32.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Canucks' penalty kill unit could not stop the Corvairs' power play, which converted on four of seven opportunities.

Niagara Falls was helped by Denis Creighton, who finished with one goal. Creighton scored short handed 5:38 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Niagara Falls. Johnny Curran assisted on the tally. Cole Vinnai also scored for Niagara Falls. More assists for Niagara Falls came via Marcus Michalski, who had one and Vito Scaringi, who had two.

Colin Furlong rejected 22 shots on goal for Caledonia. For the Corvairs, Justin Abraham, Patton, and Jake McLay(APJ) were ejected from the contest. Verrier recorded 41 saves for the Canucks. Team's Austin Wright, Frank Nemeth, and Billy Saxton were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
