Welland rides Heartwell to victory over Fort Erie, 2-1Fort Erie Leisureplex Sat, Dec 21, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The Welland Jr. Canadians relied on the sparkling performance of Jeffrey Heartwell in net to grab a 2-1 win against the Fort Erie Meteors. Welland was paced by Jason Lacroix, who finished with one goal. Lacroix scored 19:56 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Welland. Matt Sutherland provided the assist. Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 12:21 into the first period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts. The Jr. Canadians excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. Welland also got a goal from Jack Fitzgerald as well. More assists for Welland came via Adam Mataya, Max Cipriano, and Connor Walters, who contributed one a piece. Fort Erie put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Welland to score on any of its four power plays. The Meteors' offense operated below they season average. Fort Erie averages 3.2 goals per game. The Meteors were led by Braden Kavaratzis, who scored the team's only goal. Kavaratzis scored 11:30 into the third period to make the score 1-1. Nik Passero picked up the assist. Jeffrey Heartwell made 25 saves for the Jr. Canadians on 26 shots. Welland ended with 19 minutes in penalty time with seven minors and one major. For the Jr. Canadians, Tyler Stranges was ejected from the game. Liam Conway rejected 17 shots on goal for Fort Erie. The Meteors ended with 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major. For Fort Erie, Josh Micallef and Mike Boles were ejected from the contest.
