Cambridge uses shootout to best Elmira, 2-1 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Cambridge Winter Hawks defeated the Elmira Sugar Kings in a shootout 2-1 (1-0 SO).

The two teams needed six turns to complete the shootout.

Elmira was stymied by Cambridge netminder Lucas Machalski, who stopped 34 shots during the victory. Machalski managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.35 prior to the game.

The Winter Hawks' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Elmira power plays. Cambridge forced the Sugar Kings goalie Jonathan Reinhart to work between the pipes, taking 33 shots.

The Winter Hawks were led by Cody Gratton, who tallied one goal. Gratton scored on the power play 17:10 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Cambridge. Cambridge had gotten the advantage when Elmira's Mitch Klie was sent off for high sticking. Marcellis Subban provided the assist. In addition, Cambridge received assists from Cameron Pentsa, who had one.

The Sugar Kings could not produce up to they normal offensive output. Elmira averages 3.9 goals per game. The Sugar Kings' offense rang up 35 shots on the Winter Hawks' net.

Elmira was led by David Savery, who scored the team's only goal. Savery scored 18:12 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Klie assisted on the tally.

Cambridge incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Reinhart rejected 31 shots on goal for the Sugar Kings. Elmira incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors.
