Caledonia survives Fort Erie comeback, wins 4-2

The Caledonia Corvairs survived a determined comeback attempt by the Fort Erie Meteors on the way to a 4-2 win.

A goal by Kyler Nixon put Caledonia up 4-1 in the third period, but Fort Erie pulled to within two on Nik Passero's tally 7:12 into the third period.

The Corvairs got the win with help from a great game by Nixon, who had two goals and two assists. Nixon scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 10:44 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Caledonia. Caledonia earned a power play opportunity when Josh Micallef was put in the box for slashing. Jayme Forslund provided the assist. Nixon's next tally on the power play made the score Caledonia with 18:57 left in the third period. Matt Quilty picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 6:45 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

The Corvairs forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 10 minors and two majors for 50 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 26.0 minutes per game Caledonia had been spending in the box. The Meteors were unable to stop the Corvairs from sending pucks towards the net, and Caledonia eventually piled up 41 shots on goal. The Corvairs got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Caledonia additionally got points from Cody Brown, who also had one goal and one assist and Quilty, who also racked up one goal and two assists. More assists for Caledonia came via Spencer Gourlay and Connor Murphy, who contributed one a piece.

The Fort Erie penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 11 minors and two majors for 72 minutes in penalty time. The Meteors had been averaging 25.0 minutes in penalties per game. Fort Erie had trouble converting on the power play advantage, managing just two goals on 13 chances.

Braden Kavaratzis also scored for Fort Erie. In addition, Fort Erie received assists from Austin Carroll, Kyle Marino, and Jesse Pereira, who each chipped in one.

Colin Furlong rejected 26 shots on goal for Caledonia. The Corvairs registered three goals on nine power play opportunities. Team's Justin Abraham and Forslund were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. The Meteors' Liam Conway stopped 37 shots out of the 41 that he faced. For Fort Erie, Kavaratzis and Bryce Biller were ejected from the contest.
