Listowel hangs on, beats Stratford 5-3Listowel Arena Fri, Dec 20, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The Listowel Cyclones took the lead against the Stratford Cullitons in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 5-3 victory. Listowel took over the lead for good with a goal by Caleb Warren (APM) at 53 seconds in the first period. Ben Shelley picked up the assist.The Cyclones got the win thanks to a great game by Tim Nauta, who had two goals and one assist. Nauta scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 3:58 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Listowel. Listowel had gained a power play chance when Ryker Killins was whistled for hooking. Tanner Mighton provided the assist. Nauta's next tally on the power play made the score 5-3 Listowel with 11:57 left in the third period. Shelley picked up the assist. The Cyclones put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Stratford to score on any of its three power plays. Listowel forced the Cullitons goalie Michael Pesendorfer to work between the pipes, taking 33 shots. The Cyclones outdid their season average for goals scored. Listowel averages 2.7 goals per game. Listowel also got points from Warren (APM), who also racked up one goal and one assist and Shelley, who also tallied one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Ted Nichol also scored for Listowel. More assists for Listowel came via Mac Nichol, Ray McFalls, Blake Nichol, and Kenny Huether, who contributed one a piece. The Stratford penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and two majors for 32 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 26.0 minutes per game the Cullitons had been spending in the box. Stratford's offense rang up 38 shots on the Cyclones' net. The Cullitons were helped by Tyson Baker, who registered one goal and one assist. Baker scored 2:43 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Listowel. Trevor MacDonald provided the assist. Stratford additionally got points from MacDonald, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Stratford included Devon Kropf and Trevor Sauder, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Stratford were Mitch Vandergunst, who had one and Jeff McArdle, who had two. Daniel Dekoning made 35 saves for Listowel on 38 shots. For the Cullitons, Pat McKelvie(APJ) and Mitch Brooks were ejected from the contest.
