Welland downs Fort Erie in overtime, 3-2 (OT)

The Welland Jr. Canadians pulled out a 3-2 (OT) overtime victory over the Fort Erie Meteors on a clutch goal by Jason Lacroix.

Welland came back from a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Jr. Canadians was down 2-0 after a goal by Fort Erie's Matt Marsden at 6:36 in the second period. Welland knotted things up at 2-2 on a goal by Matt Cuglietta at 11:56 in the third period.

Lacroix was all over the ice for the Jr. Canadians, as he tallied two goals in the win. Lacroix's tallies came at 6:52 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Fort Erie and 2:38 into the fourth to make the score 3-2 Welland.

Welland stifled the Meteors' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Jr. Canadians' offense rang up 45 shots on Fort Erie's net. Welland was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 36 penalty minutes.

Welland additionally got points from Cuglietta, who also grabbed one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. In addition, Welland received assists from JC Thivienge, who had two and Cole McKnight and Max Cipriano, who contributed one a piece.

The Meteors put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Jr. Canadians to score on any of their 12 power plays. Fort Erie kept Welland's goalie busy throughout the game, and Jeffrey Heartwell made 29 saves on 31 shots. The Meteors could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 54 minutes in penalties during the game.

Fort Erie was helped by Jesse Pereira, who finished with one goal. Pereira scored 5:08 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Fort Erie. Braden Kavaratzis picked up the assist. Other players who recorded assists for Fort Erie were Paolo Sivilotti, Nik Passero, and Jared Marino, who each chipped in one.

Liam Conway rejected 42 shots on goal for the Meteors. Fort Erie registered zero goals on seven power play opportunities. For the Meteors, Kavaratzis and Sam Quaranta were ejected from the contest.
