Cambridge stifles Guelph's comeback, gains 6-4 victory

The Cambridge Winter Hawks, who led by three goals at one point, survived a comeback attempt by Cambridge and clinched a 6-4 victory.

The Winter Hawks led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when Cambridge's Austin Kovrig's scored at 2:54 in the third period to put the Winter Hawks up 5-2.

Hudson Michaelis had two goals to lead Cambridge to victory. Michaelis found the back of the net on the power play 11:58 into the second period to make the score 4-1 Cambridge and again while 13:57 into the third to make the score 6-4 Cambridge.

In a losing effort, the Guelph Hurricanes were led by Craig Martini, who finished with two goals and one assist. Martini scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 19:42 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Cambridge. Guelph earned a power play opportunity when Maxime Lamontagne was put in the box for tripping. Zach McFadden picked up the assist. Martini's next tally on the power play made the score 5-4 Cambridge with 8:51 left in the third period. Matt Lippa assisted on the tally.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 1:48 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Winter Hawks racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 12 minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. Cambridge had been averaging 21.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Winter Hawks made the Hurricanes' goalies to work all game long, taking 36 shots and forcing 30 saves. Bradley Van Schubert made 21 stops and Stormer Santana made nine. Cambridge bested its season scoring average. The Winter Hawks average 3.3 goals per game. Cambridge was ineffective while on the power play, as it was held to two goals off of nine man advantages.

Cambridge also got points from Cody Gratton, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Cambridge included Marcellis Subban and Jake Moggy, who scored one goal each. In addition, Cambridge received assists from Jordan Chard, Cameron Pentsa, Malcolm Bilton, Adam Dauda, Matt Pinder, and Tyler Peters, who each chipped in one.

Guelph forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 11 minors and one major for 37 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 27.0 minutes per game the Hurricanes had been spending in the box. Guelph's offense rang up 35 shots on the Winter Hawks' net.

Guelph additionally got points from Lippa, who also had one goal and one assist. Guelph also got a goal from Scott Villeneuve as well. More assists for Guelph came via Michael Courvoisier, who had two and Sam Natale APJ and Lucas Pozzobon(APM), who contributed one a piece.

Lucas Machalski rejected 31 shots on goal for Cambridge. Team's Lucas Zitmanis and Pentsa were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. The Hurricanes registered two goals on eight power play opportunities. Guelph ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Caleb Champagne was ejected from the game.
